Whilst enjoying the day, we couldn't help but admire the beautiful gardens at Como House. It is easy to see why the gardens are referred to as one of Melbourne's finest.

One of the highlights for me, was meeting some of the team from Vue de Monde. We absolutely love Shannon Bennett's philosophy on cooking and what it means to family and the daily ritual of sharing a meal together. We especially love his book Shannon Bennett's Paris, it was great to see him on hand to sign copies from this delightful book.

Melbourne French Festival

We are absolutely delighted to announce Malmaison's involvement in this year's Melbourne French Festival {Paris to Provence} being held in Melbourne Friday, 25th November - Sunday, 27th November!

In 2010, rather than exhibit at this wonderful event, we took the opportunity to enjoy some family time together surrounded by what we love ... everything French! Instead of travelling the 16,000km to France (although we would have loved to), we were able to travel to the beautiful leafy Melbourne suburb of South Yarra, and attend this great event at the beautiful historic 'Como House & Garden'.

Our excitement built as we entered the event and our senses were immediately awakened. Soaking up the vibrant atmosphere, we delighted in the playfulness of the roaming performers.

We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the variety of stalls, indulged the delicious aromas whilst deciding exactly which food to sample and enjoy, took some time out to play Petanque, enjoyed a glass of wine on the lawns whilst listening to the Melbourne French Choir.

Autumn Busyness - Time Out For Inspiration!

Some mornings after the rush of getting organised for the day ahead, I often take a quiet moment to view the beauty around me and re-focus for the day. This morning whilst in the office it was lovely to take in the blanket of Autumn tones outside with the sun streaming in through the window.

Whilst gazing, I considered the tones we are currently using to decorate and style with. As I am personally bringing the beautiful Autumn tones into the home from nature, I find myself using neutral oaks, whites and taupes to decorate with. Here is a collection of Malmaison images using these tones in different settings.

Sorry it has been a while between posts ... 2011 is absolutely flying along for myself, my business and my busy family. How about for you?

The Simple White Jug

The beauty to be found in a simple white jug always delights and inspires me.

Often it is the initial placement of the jug or pitcher that motivates me to redecorate an entire area within my home or at Malmaison. This often makes me smile as I think of the term 'start with the end in mind' as I begin the task of redecorating all for the placement of a 'simple white jug'.

Whilst my own collection of jugs includes a vast assortment of colours and florals, I am always drawn to white jugs, and especially those with a French style. I get great enjoyment from arranging them into groups, displaying them with fresh flowers and also with an assortment of other complimentary items.

Full of practical uses, often however, it is the beauty in the shape, design and styling of the jug which is most desirable. I absolutely love styling many areas in a home (as well as outdoors) with an assortment of jugs and pitchers, and feel their use adds a sense of sophistication and warmth to a home.

I love the joy of bringing Christmas into the home! We often do this through traditions that have been passed down through the generations. Here we wanted to share a few joyful traditions from Malmaison that we have shared with our customers this festive season.

The Advent Calendar

Family traditions vary from family to family. These lovely Cotton Pocket Advent and Christmas Stockings have been perfect for hiding many lovely treasures on the countdown to Christmas. Children have been delighted with the very cute stockings.

The Christmas Wreath

The tradition of displaying a wreath in the home is beautiful and signifies the beginning of the festive season in many family homes. These 'Peony, Rose & Hydrangea' Wreaths are absolutely stunning and look gorgeous displayed above a mantle, internal door or special place in the home.

The Finer Details!

I love being on location styling and photographing for various Malmaison editorials, advertisements, catalogues etc. Often it is the ‘finer details’ that go into creating the overall result and beautiful end image that we spend ages perfecting and love to look over again and again. In this post we share with you some images of these ‘finer details’ which assist in creating a simply beautiful and romantic end result.

Fresh pears provided contrasting colour and added to the casual elegance of the setting.

I personally have an enormous collection of glossy magazines from around the world which span over a few decades, and as you probably appreciate, the main subject of these magazines relate to interiors and home décor. Like many people, the reason I keep them is due to something in the images inspiring me to create something beautiful in my client’s homes or my own. Often it is the ‘finer details’ in these images that intrigue me and create that stirring inner desire to get creative.

Consider using formal table accessories in an informal fashion. Once again we have used fresh flowers and fruit to enhance the casual elegance of the table setting.

On this particular photo shoot we worked with one of our regular lovely stylists Debbie Taylor Stylist and photographer Stephen Damen Photography.

Pearl hearts at each place setting added to the romantic elegance of the table setting. Notice the subtleness of the reflection in the cutlery ... All these 'finer details' enhance the end result!

French Inspired Luncheon at 'Clare House'

The simple pleasure of creating a 'Sense of Occasion' ...

Something I am known for amongst my family and friends, is the importance I place on creating a sense of occasion at times we get together to share a meal. Whether for a special occasion or a simple family gathering, I always make an effort to prepare the table with love incorporating special touches to truly create a 'sense of occasion'. I believe it is one of the easiest and simplest ways to celebrate being together.

With these sentiments in mind, I thought I would share this lovely table setting with you, photographed in the formal dining room at ‘Clare House’. For those of you whom enjoy reading Country Home Ideas Magazine, you may recognise some of the images the editor has chosen to use in a couple of recent issues.

Although the table was set for an informal luncheon, we definitely wanted to create an extremely elegant French inspired look. To create this subtle combination we chose to use the classic white French Provincial Dinner Set, beautiful Fleur de Lys Cutlery and France Crystal Wine Glasses to add to the sophisticated look. To enhance the look we used French Provincial Quilted Placemats in a complimentary taupe tone which also worked well to protect the highly polished antique dining table.

To compliment the casual atmosphere for the luncheon, we brought the freshness of the cottage garden (viewed through the window) inside by using fresh stocks from the garden tied in a simple satin ribbon to decorate each place setting. For the finishing touches we included a bunch of stocks to decorate the table (suitable for a luncheon theme), French Bee Embroidered Napkins tied with a satin ribbon and beautiful Patina French Hen Candles from France to enhance the natural theme.

With special thanks to Abigail & Peter for their kindness and for opening their beautiful home 'Clare House' to Malmaison once again.

So, we wish to introduce to you one of our key staff members and friend, Megan, often in the front line as well as behind the scenes working her magic to help everything run as smoothly as possible.

Megan Greasley, also made the move to beautiful Castlemaine for a ‘slow’ lifestyle after several hectic years working in the midst of Melbourne’s busy corporate world as an Events Manager. Prior to this Megan spent time in the UK and is originally from the Sunshine Coast. As a true Queenslander Megan makes regular trips to the beach, but also adores the seasons and way of life in Central Victoria. Her passions are cooking, family, collecting gorgeous objects (!), interior decorating and history. As a keen amateur Stylist, Malmaison is the perfect place for Megan to explore all her creative energies!

Ask an Expert - Decorating in a French Provincial Theme

I am so pleased to share Malmaison’s latest editorial contribution featured in the current issue of Australian House & Garden Magazine. Earlier this year I was approached by Australian House & Garden Magazine to assist in answering a query from one of their readers about redecorating with a French Provincial theme. Of course I was overjoyed & honored that Malmaison had been asked by such an esteemed design magazine in the industry. I was only too happy to provide some advice for their regular feature ‘Ask an Expert - H&G Advice’ Feature for September 2010 entitled ‘3 Ways to French Flair’.

I look forward to sharing the full editorial advice provided about redecorating in a ‘French Provincial’ theme in my next post. L’Exposition ~ The Original French Tote

Bonjour, Megan here ... We have a gorgeous range of Burlap Tote & Messenger Bags in store at the moment, each with a different iconic motif print...the perfect way to carry your shopping in style while saying ‘no’ to plastic bags & helping the environment! I wanted to share a little bit about these bags because one in particular reminds me of what Edwynna is busy doing this week...filtering through the gorgeous array of treasures at the Melbourne Gift & Home Wares trade show. This bag has the text “PARIS L’Exposition Universe de 1900” printed across the front in ultra chic retro style font, referring to the great World Fair hosted by Paris in the year 1900.

The fair was extra special because it launched Art Nouveau French design to the world (Malmaison loves this style!) and showcased the finest in furniture, jewellery, giftware, ceramics, posters, glass, textiles and metalwork money could buy at the turn of the century. We can only imagine the absolutely exquisite products on display! So all are excited here in store to see what French inspired treasures Edwynna brings home...unpacking new stock from the fair will be simply heavenly & make another day feel just like Christmas working at Malmaison! Our Favourite Things for Winter ...

We have finally embraced the colder weather here at Malmaison and thought we would share some of our 'Favourite Things' for Winter. We are absolutely loving the 'French Grey' influence in store at the moment and have found wonderful things to grace every room in the home. We are particularly loving the ceramic French Hen Range and new comfy Juliette Wing Chair ... perfect for snuggling up with a good book.

We have been including 'French Grey' in our styling quite a bit in the past couple of months, and in particular enjoyed styling a few boy's bedrooms using the French grey 'Star Quilts' to add warmth and whimsical 'Up Up & Away' wall art by Love Mae, perfect for all ages, from little baby to the aviation enthusiast.

Wonderful for adding interest to a study area 'a place to dream'.

Fête Nationale ~ le 14 Juliette

Viva la France! The Storming of the Bastille in Paris occurred on 14 July 1789. While the medieval fortress and prison known as the Bastille contained only seven prisoners, its fall was the flashpoint of the French Revolution and it subsequently became an icon of the French Republic. In France, Le quatorze juillet (14 July) is a public holiday, formally known as the Fête de la Fédération (Federation Holiday) also referred to as Bastille Day. You don't need to be in France to celebrate Bastille Day, with many people around the world celebrating 'Fête de la Fédération' or 'Bastille Day' with great vigour in many ways. My family will be celebrating with a few other local families whom we share a common love of France with. We are each bringing our favourite French dish to share (mine will be Tarte au Citron, a classic French dessert). We will no doubt listen to French music, drink a little champagne, enjoy beautiful French food and have a 'serious' game of Pétanque planned with the children.

How would you like to celebrate? Watch a French film, enjoy a meal at your local French restaurant, host a 'Bastille Day' party, plant a French rose, drink French champagne, or the ultimate way to celebrate ... go to Paris! My plan is to celebrate Bastille Day in 2011 with my family and friends in France ... I will keep you posted.

Our 'Rose of the Month' is the beautiful hybrid tea rose is the 'Madame A. Meilland' better known today as 'Peace'. I have many roses growing in my garden and this is one of my favourites!

A Winter’s Tale

Recently I had the pleasure of working with fellow local business owners Melissa Langford (Absinthe Designs), Suzi Carr (Mockingbird Sing) and Julia Bandelli (Basil & Gertrude), to style ‘A Winter Image’ for a local business event invitation which captured the essence of winter through décor and fashion. Shot on a perfectly wintery day, the image was styled around a central focal point of a blazing open fire, colours of late Autumn and French Oak.

The image includes furniture and homewares from Malmaison and Basil & Gertrude, beautifully complimented with gorgeous winter garments designed by Melissa Langford of Absinthe Design and clothing stocked at Mockingbird Sing.

Parisian Haute Tea ~ Tres Chic!

What a beautiful day we all enjoyed at our recent VIP event ~ Parisian Haute Tea. We couldn’t have asked a more perfect day with the sun shining and a gentle warm breeze blowing through the Theatre Royal Courtyard in Castlemaine.

Our guests commented on how “they felt as if they had walked down the rose petal covered lane beside Malmaison and been transported into a little piece of Paris”. Surrounded by 150 year old brickwork, stunning wall murals, and listening to classic French music, guests enjoyed a delightful Parisian Haute Tea.

A Little Piece of Paris

Each table was set with white cloths, fresh flowers in sweet little Parisian vases and individual Parisian Haute Tea menus. Charming red café chairs helped to set the scene beautifully!

Haute Tea Delights

As guests arrived they were warmly greeted then presented with a refreshing glass of Sparkling Rosé to begin a festive afternoon.

The traditional Parisian Haute Tea included delicate ribbon sandwiches and a range of decadent French pastries ~ Mini Choux Pastry Swans, Fondant Petit Fours, Petit Strawberry Cupcakes, French Vanilla Pastries, Fondant Petit Fours and of course the famous French Macaroons. The Haute Tea was complimented with aromatic teas, café and finished with a stunning Chocolate Gateau … just devine!

Honoured Guests

Many guests travelled long distances to spend the afternoon with us, literally travelling from all over the state. We were very appreciative of the efforts they all made to join us. Guests enjoyed spending time with friends and making some new friends along the way who also enjoy a love of France.

Music, Dancing and a Puppeteer!

As well as enjoying the beautiful ambiance in the courtyard, we were entertained with an impromptu Marionette Show by our resident puppeteer (our son Harrison). The children also loved dancing through the rose petals ~ a delightful touch!

Prizes

Angela (Mernda, Vic) was so excited as her name was drawn for the major prize of a weekend luxury Spa Package at Madison Spa Resort and Katrina (Castlemaine, Vic) was absolutely thrilled with her stunning Legle de Limoge Presentation Plate & Cloche. Other winners on the day included; Pamela (Maldon, Vic) Sabre Kitchen Knife & Tea Towel; Emel (Meadow Heights, Vic) Royal Doulton Posy Vase.

All guests attending on the day received a special boutique bag filled with special treats to take home and enjoy! Delights such as French Ribbon, Michel's Fine Biscuit Co. Biscuits, a synopsis of the 'History of Malmaison', VIP Guest Letter and Loyalty Card introduction just to name a few ...

What a wonderful team we had to bring this beautiful event all together. Our heartfelt thanks must go to our wonderful staff on the day; Megan, Georgie, Jane, Vicki, Brad & Murry. Without their very special efforts the day would not have been the successful it was...and yes we all got a chance to enjoy the ambiance and a slice of the beautiful Chocolate Gateau afterwards and reflect on how much we all enjoyed the event.

Annual Event

Thank you again to all those who attended. The feedback, emails and cards received after the event have been lovely and we have been overwhelmed with your thoughtful comments. Mother’s Day is celebrated around the world in a way in which reflects each nation’s customs and traditions, however as we all know some things in life translate the same through every language. The Language of Love!

In Australia on the 2nd Sunday in May, many Australian families gather together to celebrate with love and joy their mothers, grandmothers, great grandmothers, aunts, and other special women and mother’s in their lives. Mother’s Day often begins with the lovely treat of breakfast in bed and is followed throughout the day with Mum being pampered with special gifts, flowers and cards made by children in the family.

In France, Mother’s Day or Fête des Mères is celebrated on the last Sunday in May and is a day to make Mum (Maman) the centre of attention. On this special Spring day, family’s often come together and celebrate with a special meal, flowers and cards. Children will often practice a poem to surprise their mother with, and at the conclusion of a special meal Mother’s are often presented with a beautiful cake that often resembles a bouquet of flowers.

We are enjoying a beautiful Easter and have been collecting eggs of a different kind in our garden. Our gorgeous daughter Mietta is holding ‘Josephine’ after collecting some precious eggs she so kindly produced for our family on Easter morning. In Australia, children enjoy the excitement of the treasure hunt the Easter Bunny has left for them to enjoy. In France, children are delighted on Easter morning when they hear the church bells ring, as this beautiful sound signifies the return of the 'Cloche Volant' or 'Flying Bells' from the Vatican in Rome. These 'Flying Bells' bring with them lots of chocolates in the form of eggs, bells and fish for the children to hunt for in the garden.

We wish you all a very Happy Easter ~ Pâques Heureux spent with those who are special to you.

French Chic for Bébé Girls

Recently after reading another great post from one of my favourite blog sites 'Mini-Stylista' (about a gorgeous little boy's bedroom featured in Little One Baby Magazine), I thought I would share with you a few beautiful items we have recently used to help long time Malmaison customers to decorate a room for a very special arrival!

Having decorated other rooms for this couple before, we know how much they love French style, we also know they are expecting a little girl, so together we chose a subtle colour palette with a combination of soft pinks, whites and the introduction of a few pastel colours by using a combination of Wall Art by Love Mae, sweet 'Birdie' mobiles and a beautiful blind using 'Provence' Cherrywood fabric from Warwick.

In the room we have included a French Style Bebe Cot and matching French Style Bebe Change Table which doubles as a beautiful Chest of Drawers. To enjoy late night feeds in comfort we have also included the beautiful Chantelle Arm Chair.

One wonderful finishing touch was the painting of an existing book-shelf for special keepsakes and somewhere to place essential items for the nursery. The pieces used were chosen for their sophisticated elegance and practicality, as they will be suitable as the child grows up. The cot transforms into a toddler bed, the change table will be used a chest of drawers with a beautiful top to display a lamp or special treasures when nappy time is finished, and the Chantelle Arm Chair will be perfect to use as a reading chair into teenage years and beyond!

We are all absolutely delighted with the end result and await the exciting arrival of one very special little girl!

Finding 'French Inspiration' through the written word!

Inspiration for French style can be found in many ways. Visits to France, watching French movies, eating at French restaurants, surfing the internet to view amazing French sites, learning the beautiful French language or listening to friend's French travel tales just to name a few. One of the ways I draw inspiration is by reading beautiful books.

Ever since I was a little girl I have been drawn to the beautiful imagry of France ... scenes, gardens, interiors, clothes, food etc etc ... my visual list is endless. I have a wonderful collection of books which I regularly paw over. I love these books for many reasons, they are my design bibles, beautiful to display on a sideboard or coffee table and a constant reminder of the beauty around us. I love books about French interior design and style, books about Paris the city and France's beautiful regional areas, French cooking, children's books about France and also those written in the French language (which I find ever so helpful for improving my own knowledge and understanding of the beautiful French language).

We all have different ways to treat ourselves and for me, there is nothing more indulging than immersing myself in my latest favourite French style book whilst sitting in a quiet place enjoying a cup of tea out of my favourite Limoge Cup & Saucer. This week my absolute favourite book is by renowned Australian Chef Shannon Bennett ... Shannon Bennett's PARIS. Bennett takes us on a personal tour of his beloved city of Paris. His book is exquisite in it's presentation, with beautiful imagry, recipes, favourite restaurants and is also beautifully compact, perfect to fit into your handbag. Tres Chic!

Along with many other new book arrivals this week, this is my absolute favourite!
